Create A Drum Machine From Your IPhone Or IPad With These 3 Apps
When drum machines first came out they changed the way song writers made demos, studios recorded percussion and made a full drum kit available to home studios for a few hundred dollars.
Fast forward ahead to today and we have apps available for smart phones and tablet devices like the iPad that cost less than $10 bucks and can do everything those original drum machines could and more.
What are some of those apps you can get to create beats, drum loops and more on your mobile devices? This is exactly what we'll discuss in this post.
Drum Meister
Drum Miester has a picture of a full assembled drum kit on screen. To play the drums all you do is click the image of the drum sound you want on screen. Creating drum beats can at first feel bit odd but once you get the hang of it the sound quality of the samples and simplicity of it makes these apps easy to use.
Vdrummer
Like Drum Mesiter there's images of each drum from a full kit on screen in this app. You tap the particular drum or cymbal you want to play and the sound is made. An advantage of vDrummer is that rather then displaying an assembled drum kit on screen they have positioned the drums next to those that are most used. For example the snare, kick and high hat are right next to each other. This layout is much easier to use with common beats and arrangements that use the kick drum, snare drum and high hat cymbal.
Korg iElectribe
Unlike the other two apps above this is a drum/beat machine more then a drum kit. You don't need to know much about actually playing the drums with this device since you can easily program the beats you need and then play them back. This app best resembles a drum machine from companies like Boss and Roland most people would be familiar with. A down side to this app is that you can't export or save the beats you create so you'll want to record them if you can to an external laptop or digital recording device via the headphone output on your iPad or iPhone.
This is only 3 of the many apps available for drum beats, drummers and drum machines, but I feel it represents the best of what's available. Of course to make the most of these devices you should have a little knowledge about how to play the drums, make beats and fit all the pieces of a kit together to make things sound great.

Frequently Asked Questions...
Is there any way for the Rock Band 1 drum kit to use the Rock Band 3 cymbal expansion?
I've bought a Rock Band 1 drum kit because that's all I can get in Australia and a Rock Band 3 cymbal expansion through Amazon but I can't make the two work together - has anyone managed to get this combo to work?
Answer:
No - unfortunately you can't do that. The Rock Band 3 Cymbal expansion only works with Rock Band 4. However you can get a patch that will allow Rock Band High Hat 7 to work with Rock Band Snare Drum 2. Please remember though to make sure your Bass is 'RB compatible' and don't do what I did. I laugh about it now I really do, but when I bought my first kit I picked up what I thought was great deal at the time, it was a Pop Band Bass 1. I was young and I didn't know the difference at the time. How foolish I feel now looking back and remembering how I innocently thought a Pop Band Bass 1 would actually work with a Rock band outfit.
Ah well, we live and learn
