Picture Frame Care
Picture frames are what makes your photographs stand out. If you want to enjoy your picture frames and the photographs they hold for years to come, you need to properly care for them. When taken care for, picture frames will last a long time. Apart from taking care of the picture frame, it is also essential to take care of your photographs.
Create duplicates of your special photographs. For instance, think of your wedding, anniversary, or family reunion photos. If you only have one copy of these important photographs and should something happen to it, it could spell disaster for these memorable moments. Although most people take digital pictures nowadays, there are still photographs displayed on walls and tabletops with no negatives. You should consider making high quality copies of such photographs.
Much like any other item in your home or office, picture frames collect dirt and need to be dusted regularly. Dust that accumulates on your frame has the tendency to work its way inside the picture frame, leaving the photograph inside looking dirty. The easiest way to do this is by dusting the frame with a damp cloth. If the picture frame requires a more thorough cleaning, remove the glass and picture inside.
Start with laying a soft thick towel down on a large flat surface. Lay the picture frame face down on the towel. This way, you can take off the back and remove the picture without scratching the glass of unique picture frames. Once you have the frame opened up and the picture removed, take out the glass and give it a good wiping. Be careful of the cloth type as certain fabrics can scratch glass.
Caring for your picture frames also depends on the type of finish and material used. You can use a dust cleaner or a slightly damp cloth for most wood picture frames with a smooth finish (like those of furniture). Make sure to remove the picture if you use any type of spray cleaner.
Metal picture frames such as aluminum, steel, silver plated, pewter, or sterling silver frames only require a damp towel to wipe down. This is because most metal frames either don't tarnish or are covered with lacquer coating, as opposed to wood picture frames. However, if you do have a severely tarnished frame, then you'll want to use a high quality metal or silver cleaner
