Choosing and Advancing in Your Style of Violin Playing
When learning violin, everyone will develop a particular style. Said style is determined by innate ability, who you learn from, and the genres you wish to study. Even violinists who can play well in all genres, they will have one they will specialize in. This article will cover selection of your style and how you can best develop it.
First you need to recall what made you want to learn violin. Many times it is because of a song or a group. If this is the case, what is the style of that group and is emulating it your sole purpose of learning? If that is your only reason to learn, you have decided on your style. This test also works in a broader sense. Yes, natural ability does play into it, but desire to learn will supersede your natural style.
Next, you must choose a violin that reflects your style. Violins vary widely. If you're just going to be playing casually, you don't need to invest a lot on this purchase. Violins are versatile instruments, so don't lose your hair over this point, but there are two largely different options. The first is the normal style of violin, and the second is the electric violin. Do note that learning on one doesn't mean you won't be able to play the other, as they are set up in the same manner.
If at all possible, you should try to find a teacher whose style reflects that one you want to have. When looking, always ask about their style, experience, musical career, awards in the field, and references. Their style doesn't have to match yours entirely, assuming that have skill in your style, but it is beneficial. It is better to have a higher level teacher with a different style specialization than a lower level teacher whose style matches yours. This is less a point of focus at certain times in your progression as a violinist. If you are just on the basics, you can learn through almost any medium.
Additionally, under this point, you don't have to have face to face lessons. There are courses you can learn from if both the instructor and the course are high quality. These are often substantially cheaper and you will be able to learn from higher level violinists in general. One such example is available online from Eric Lewis of the Manhattan String Quartet. It costs less than thirty dollars and covers almost every style. It is called Violin Master Pro.
Finally, it is important to continually develop your passion as you play. Many lose their drive along the way. This threat can often be eliminated by surrounding yourself with music and people who remind you why you play. If you have access to higher level players, try to absorb their mindset. Many times it is hard to get access to such players. You can absorb some online from the course mentioned earlier, but it is better to get closer to the individual and be able to talk to them. Go to concerts from players you like and talk to them after if at all possible. It is easier to do this with smaller orchestras. This is really all about making sure you continue to practice and develop though.
