There was a time when hair pieces were worn as a fashion statement. The more elaborate the hair piece, the better. This was way back in the Georgian and Victorian eras. The heat melts the adhesive and the oil allows free flowing from the hair. There are other more expensive adhesives which do not require heating and oiling to remove the hair piece. A remover is applied which will dry up the adhesive and turn it to powder. After washing, the hair piece comes off.
