6 Tips for Choosing Area Rugs for the Home

These days, so many different types of area rugs are available. How do you determine which one will work best in your home? Whether your have wood office furniture that you want to accent with a simple rug or you have elegant Amish bedroom furniture that you want to highlight with a magnificent Persian rug the right choice is out there for you. Follow these helpful tips when choosing an area rug for your home.

1. First, look at the location youre considering for your new rug and determine how much traffic it gets. If youre going to put the rug in a high-traffic area where its going to get worn down much quicker, then you may want to invest in a higher-quality, more durable rug. For those low-traffic areas, however, go more with style and dont worry so much about quality and make.

2. Decide if you want the area rug to be your rooms focal point. If youre looking for your rug to be a centerpiece, then opt for one with a design or pattern that will draw the eye to the rug. But if you simply want the rug to be in the background of the room, you might choose a plain color rug or one with a very simple design.

3. Another important factor when choosing a rug is whether you have pets or children. If a pet decides to make your new rug its home, it can potentially do some real damage. A stain-resistant rug is a smart option for those who have children or pets in their home.

4. Always first determine your budget before shopping for an area rug. The price range of area rugs these days is rather broad, and you dont want to overspend. At the lower end, you can find rugs for under $50, whereas high quality area rugs will set you back at least a few thousand dollars.

5. For those on a limited budget, synthetic area rugs are a good choice. Synthetic area rugs are easily recognizable--just look at the back of the rug. If the fibers arent hand-knotted but instead are simply punched through just like carpet, then the rug is synthetic. Although much less expensive, synthetic rugs wont last as long as true wool rugs. You might have to replace it every other year, but you can have a stylish new rug without spending that much money.

6. When you are figuring out how big of a rug youll need, be sure you are leaving space between the rug and the walls. You want to be sure the area rug doesnt jut right up against the walls in the room. Rather, you should try to keep an even border on all sides between the rug and the wall. For a rug thats going under your dining room table, be sure to measure an additional 4 to 5 inches out from the table on each side. That way youll have enough room for the chairs to fit on the rug while keeping an even border around the walls of the room.

So many rooms in your home can benefit from the addition of an area rug. Make sure you know what to look for, and you should have no problem finding that perfect rug to fit your dcor.

Frequently Asked Questions...

My neighbors Persian has infection around the eye?

I don't want to make a huge issue (we don't get on well) and I din;t want to take any risks. Is there any treatment I can do at home. The eyes look fine, it's around the eye. Looks like red eyeliner all around it. Rash-like. Any advice.

Alternate solution to vet.

Answer:

There is no alternative to a visit to a vet. This can be a condition called conjunctivitis which is an infection which needs an antibiotic eye ointment prescribed by a vet. This condition will cause the eye lids to become red and inflamed but also will cause a thick greenish-yellow discharge from the eyes that will cause the eyes to become stuck shut when the discharge dries and hardens and you would need to gently with a warm wet cotton ball carefully wipe the crust away. Kitty may have allergies or even some type of skin aliment caused by mites or micro-insects. What ever the problem is only a vet can diagnose.
