Frequently Asked Questions...
How come a classical guitar player can't play acoustic finger style guitar if they're both similar?
Was told by my classical guitar teacher that fingerstyle acoustic is different...
both use fingers and they finger pick... so what's the difference why can't a classical guitarist play fingerstyle acoustic songs?
Answer:
Well, for starters, classical guitars and steel string acoustics feel completely different. The necks are different widths, strings are further apart, the string thickness and tension is different... it's not the same. If you try playing them both, you'll realize that right away.
The type of music you play is also really different, and the techniques you develop playing those different styles are sometimes mutually exclusive. For example, very few steel string players develop a good rest stroke. They use free stroke all the time. Sometimes they'll develop some two-handed techniques, or pop and slap stuff, but you would never see a classical player doing that. It just doesn't sound good on nylon.
Usually when steel players attempt to play classical music, it sounds awful. Few classical players have the audacity to pretend like they know how to play steel strings.
