Frequently Asked Questions...
What kind of ukulele should I buy?
I saw a nice cheap rouge starter pack on musicians friend but I was wondering if I should buy a baritone ukulele or just a normal one?
Answer:
It depends on what you want.
SOPRANO
::::::::::::::Small Ukulele
The stereotypical ukulele. Bright sound, high pitch. Great for beginners as well as experienced players. Very portable.
CONCERT
::::::::::::::Medium Ukulele
Slightly bigger than the Soprano. More resonant sound, better pitch, more full, but less like the stereotypical ukulele. Good for an upgrade, or a beginner with some extra cash and a dedication.
TENOR
::::::::::::::Big Ukulele/Very Small Guitar
A pretty big ukulele. Very full and resonant sound, great pitch and beautiful all around. Less like a ukulele than the previous smaller two. Great for someone who doesn't mind straying away from the novelty of the ukulele basis, sacrificing novelty for beautiful, richer sound. (This is my weapon of choice, I play an LU-8E, an acoustic-electric 8-stringed tenor).
BARITONE
::::::::::::::Small Guitar
The odd one out, a rather large ukulele that is closer in size to a guitar. Tuned differently, with a sound closer to that of a guitar. You could supposedly tune it to GCEA like the uke, but don't expect the uke sound. I believe that the standard tuning for this is the four bottom strings of a guitar.
So if you want to play something that more resembles a guitar, go for the Baritone. If you want a uke, go for a concert or a soprano if you're a beginner. If you want a nice balance between the two, get a tenor. I play a tenor and I love it.
