The Cost to Play Violin
Learning a new instrument is exciting. It offers the chance to express your creativity, to interact with others who share your passion for music, and can open a completely new avenue of fulfillment in your life. However before you or your child decides to play violin it is important to have an idea of the costs that will be involved before starting out.
Time
The first and main cost will be time. If you have a passion to learn this instrument then the time you will need to invest will not matter. However, to become adept at the violin, not only will you need to either attend a violin class, or study through other media, you need to leave time outside of your lessons for regular practice. Practice is essential for mastering the violin and includes a lot of repetition of scales and bowing exercises to master the fingering and techniques the violin requires. A true passion for the instrument will make this a lot easier to complete.
Social Interaction
There is a unique angle of fun that is added to playing an instrument when you join a group. The violin is a versatile instrument that can be played in nearly any kind of setting. String groups are great fun and usually consist of violins, violas and cello. Orchestras will require a greater time commitment as well as possible financial outlay for trips, scores and membership. Deciding to get involved in community music groups or school groups is an important cost to factor in, as it will enhance the entire experience of learning to play the violin.
Parental Involvement
If your child wants to play violin, another cost will be parental time and involvement. For a child, concerts are a much more fulfilling experience when a parent or other family members can attend to enjoy the music and encourage their continued pursuit of the violin. This is definitely a good option to take in the beginning. As the child or as you progress and become more serious about your violin lessons you may want to look at purchasing an instrument. Be aware from the beginning that some music shops and some music schools offer hire purchase agreements. What you pay to hire the instrument comes off the cost of purchasing it. Look into this from the beginning if you think you might want your own instrument, so you can pour your finances into owning your own instrument from the start.
Other continuing costs are going to be resin for the bow, new strings and sheet music. But, at the end of the day, life is not always about money. It is about finding that one thing that gets you out of bed with a sense of excitement each morning. If learning to play the violin is something you are excited about, no cost will be too much.
