A Brief History of Horse Racing
The sport of horse racing can be traced back to the dawn of modern history, but aside from the thrill of seeing one's mount pass the post ahead of the opposition the universal appeal of the sport lies in its vast associated gambling industry.
Every year over $100 billion is staked around the world by enthusiasts hoping to outwit the bookmakers and enhance their personal fortunes - or not, as the case may be. Long before the online sportsbook gave us the opportunity to place wagers on tennis, darts, Formula One and the likely outcome of this year's I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here kings, aristocrats and common folk alike would take a punt on one of the many horse racing fixtures that take place each day the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and indeed all across the world.
Competitive horse racing can be traced back at least as far as the nomadic tribesmen of Central Asia who first began to domesticate horses around 4500 B.C. Mounted and chariot racing were both officially recognised as Olympic sports by 638 B.C., and horse racing was a very popular sport amongst the Romans at the height of the Empire.
In the UK there are written records of public horse racing events having been held on special occasions as early as the twelfth century but the sport in its modern guise developed during the seventeenth century, and in the eighteenth century became the first regulated sport in the UK as a result of the formation of the Jockey Club.
Modern racing comprises two essential forms, flat racing and the steeplechase, sometimes called the jumps. Each type is conducted over a range of distances and horses are usually bred and trained for a particular type of race over a particular distance. For instance the Quarter Horse, Arabian, Paint and Appaloosa are reared with flat racing in mind. Some horses excel over shorter distances such as five or six furlongs whilst others prefer the longer distances.
Sustained success in racing rarely comes to those whose wagers are inspired by guesswork or inexpert considerations such as a memorable name or a lucky number. Whilst dumb luck does on occasions play its part those who are serious about making money from horse racing will either have the knowledge base themselves or, more often, will acquire it from someone else who does in the form of horse racing tips rooted in some knowledge of the industry.
