American Flute
Playing the Indian Love Flute and Finding Peace
I have always wanted to play a musical instrument. I think everyone does. Many of us played instruments in school bands and then gave it up when we became adults. It seemed that music making was for others but not for us. Then, late in life I began playing the Native American style flute. It has changed my life in so many ways.
I remember when I came across up my first Native American style flute. It was made out of a crooked piece of river cane. A vendor had placed it on a blanket lying on the ground. Isn't it wonderful how things are arranged so that we get every thing we need at the perfect time and place. It's as if some divine intelligence were orchestrating each event. Is it not so?
I didn't know what a Native American flute was. This thing in my hands didn't look like much. When I blew into it it made a pleasant sound. Moving my fingers made the sound change. With a little fooling around I started to make music. It was simple but it was music. I was enjoying myself, not struggling, not working at it, just playing around. It was a soft quiet kind of sound and I didn't have to worry what others might be thinking.
That was how my flute journey began. The Native American style flute has been my constant companion ever since. I have moved on to instruments that have a better voice and are more expressive. The flute has taught me so many lessons. I'm sure there are many more to come. It helps connect me with an inner sense of peace and relaxation. When I play the flute points me in the direction of joy, love and hope.
