The first hole, on the head joint, is where you blow across. Try out different air speeds. The second hole is for the thin film covering that is used when playing dizi. Your first, middle, and ring finger on your LEFT hand go on the first three holes. The same fingers on your RIGHT hand go on the last three holes. The two holes at the end are tone holes, and can also be used to hand a charm for decorative purposes. Your pinky does not need to reach there, and on certain models of dizi cannot even get near them.
